How to be modern today?

Does it mean the same to be modern today, as it was meant to be yesterday or it is going to mean in the future. Is there a difference?
And why is there such a strong movement and tendency to turn back in time even though being modern seems to have never been more modern then nowadays. Populists scream out loud, Alexa wants to be shouted at and human behavior more than often leaves people speechless.
