How to be modern today?

I think being modern today is about rescuing the 20th century attitute that style and substance can't be separated, that one informs the other, that clarity does not come at the expense of beauty (I'm thinking of Eames chairs, Pollock drips, early Esquire magazine, and writing by Joan Didion & Susan Sontag & George Orwell & James Baldwin & ... ). I'm nostalgic for well-dressed, well-spoken radicals with a sense of urgency. Which is clichéd. But it's also what may be lacking today.
