How to be modern today?

You better don't be. "Modern" in a contemporary sense of the word still originates from modernist ideas und therefore, just like Modernism, belongs entirely to the past. Just get over the belief anybody could be at the forefront of whatever. And don't you dare think of yourself as being "modern" for doing so.

Having said that, to be modern today, try avoiding edgy opinions. And too much irony doesn't do you any good either.
